We talk a lot about high-performance upgrades and engine tuning, but there is one component on your vehicle that matters more than horsepower: Your Tires.
They are the only thing touching the road. If they are bald, your $5,000 brakes and upgraded suspension can’t save you.
In our latest Instagram reel, we showed you the simplest hack in the book to check if your tires are safe to drive on. You don’t need a fancy tread depth gauge or a trip to the shop. You just need the change in your pocket.
The Canadian Toonie is actually a perfect measuring tool for tire safety. Here is the step-by-step guide we demonstrated in the video:
As we showed in the video, reading the results is simple:
In a dry, warm climate, you might get away with racing slicks. In Calgary? No chance.
When your tread gets too low (into the silver), your tires lose the ability to pump water and slush out from under the wheel. This leads to hydroplaning—where your car essentially turns into a water ski and you lose all steering control.
Check all four tires, and check multiple spots on each tire. Sometimes a tire can look good on the outside edge but be completely bald on the inside due to poor alignment.
Did your tires fail the Toonie Test? Don't risk it. We carry a full range of high-performance and safety-rated tires to keep you planted on the road.
