How a $2 Coin Can Save Your Life on Calgary Roads

How a $2 Coin Can Save Your Life on Calgary Roads

We talk a lot about high-performance upgrades and engine tuning, but there is one component on your vehicle that matters more than horsepower: Your Tires.

They are the only thing touching the road. If they are bald, your $5,000 brakes and upgraded suspension can’t save you.

In our latest Instagram reel, we showed you the simplest hack in the book to check if your tires are safe to drive on. You don’t need a fancy tread depth gauge or a trip to the shop. You just need the change in your pocket.

The Toonie Trick: How to Do It

The Canadian Toonie is actually a perfect measuring tool for tire safety. Here is the step-by-step guide we demonstrated in the video:

  1. Grab a Toonie: Any standard two-dollar coin will do.
  2. Find the Groove: Place the coin into the deepest groove of your tire tread.
  3. Check the "Waterline": Look at where the rubber meets the coin.

The Verdict: Gold vs. Silver

As we showed in the video, reading the results is simple:

  • In the Gold (You're Good): If the tire tread covers the outer Gold Ring of the coin, your tires still have decent tread depth. You have enough rubber to channel water away and grip the asphalt.
  • Halfway Through Silver (Time to Replace): If the tread is worn down so that the coin is sitting shallow, and you can see past the gold into the Silver Core, it is time for new tires.

Why This Matters in Calgary

In a dry, warm climate, you might get away with racing slicks. In Calgary? No chance.

When your tread gets too low (into the silver), your tires lose the ability to pump water and slush out from under the wheel. This leads to hydroplaning—where your car essentially turns into a water ski and you lose all steering control.

Tariq’s Tip

Check all four tires, and check multiple spots on each tire. Sometimes a tire can look good on the outside edge but be completely bald on the inside due to poor alignment.

Did your tires fail the Toonie Test? Don't risk it. We carry a full range of high-performance and safety-rated tires to keep you planted on the road.
