AWD Winter Tires: Why Your xDrive or quattro Needs Them

AWD Helps You Go. Your Tires Do the Stopping.

A lot of AWD BMWs, Audis and Mercedes-Benz SUVs are still on all-seasons in October. The reasoning is usually the same: it has xDrive, so it'll be fine.

AWD is a genuinely good system to have in Calgary. It just does a different job than most people think.

A lot of the BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz SUVs we see in October are AWD, and a fair number are still on all-season tires. The reasoning is usually the same: it has xDrive, so it'll be fine in a Calgary winter.

AWD is a genuinely good system to have here. It just doesn't do the job most people think it does. Here's where AWD helps, where it doesn't, and why winter tires on AWD are still the combination we recommend.

What AWD Actually Does

xDrive, quattro and 4MATIC all solve the same problem: putting power to the ground. With drive going to all four wheels, the car pulls away from a snowy intersection or climbs a slick hill without spinning a wheel. That's real traction, and it's why AWD feels so sure of itself in the first few metres.

Every Car Brakes With Four Wheels

AWD only helps while the engine is pushing. The moment you lift off and press the brake, an AWD car and a two-wheel-drive car are doing the same thing: four tires trying to hold the road. There's no stopping advantage. How short you stop comes down to how much grip your tires have at that temperature, on that surface.

Turning Is a Grip Problem Too

Corners work the same way. Some AWD systems shift power between wheels to help the car rotate under throttle. Even so, the tires set the limit of how hard you can turn. Run out of grip mid-corner and the drivetrain can't hand it back.

The Confidence Gap

This is where we see AWD catch people out. The car pulls away so cleanly that it's easy to read the road as grippier than it is. Drivers then carry more speed into the next stop or corner than conditions allow. The AWD hardware also adds weight, which gives the brakes and tires more to manage. The car that accelerates best in the snow needs tires that can match it on the way back down.

Below 7°C, All-Seasons Lose Their Grip

All-season rubber stiffens once temperatures sit consistently below about 7°C, which in Calgary covers most of the months ahead. Winter tires use a softer compound that stays pliable in the cold, with tread and siping designed for snow and ice. Look for the three-peak mountain and snowflake symbol on the sidewall, and book your seasonal wheel swap once the cold settles in.

On AWD, fit four matching winter tires. AWD systems expect all four tires to be the same size and similar in wear, and a mismatched set makes the drivetrain work against itself. Our drivetrain diagnostics page explains why.

Heading West Comes With a Legal Requirement

If your winter includes trips to Golden, Revelstoke or anywhere past the Rockies: BC law requires winter tires on most highways from October 1 through April 30, with the requirement ending March 31 on select highways outside mountain passes and high-snowfall areas. Approved tires carry either the M+S marking or the three-peak mountain and snowflake symbol, and need at least 3.5 millimetres of tread. AWD is not a substitute.

Quick Answers

Do I need winter tires if I have AWD?
For a Calgary winter, yes. AWD helps you accelerate; winter tires are what help you stop and turn.

Should winter tires go on all four wheels?
Yes, and on AWD it matters even more. Four matched tires keep the car predictable and the drivetrain working as designed.

The Bigger Picture

AWD and winter tires aren't competing choices. One gets you moving and the other gets you stopped, and a Calgary winter asks for both. The engineering in these cars is excellent; it just needs the right rubber to work with.
